Unemployment, Hunger, Malnutrition Wrack Europe

The International Labor Organization (ILO) has issued it annual “World of Work” report, which warns that rising unemployment, and increasing length of period unemployed, is creating a serious risk of social unrest and political explosions, especially in the EU countries. “In advanced economies, unemployment spells have lengthened and more workers are becoming discouraged and dropping out of the labor market altogether. This… can weaken previously stable societies, as opportunities to advance in a good job and improve one’s standard of living become the exception rather than the rule,” the report says.

More than 2.7 million jobs have disappeared in the EU since 2007, where total unemployment now exceeds 20 million. About 30% of that total (6.2 million) are in Spain alone.

In the region of Andalusia, Spain, which has a 37% unemployment rate, 4 of every 10 children are malnourished, according to Spain’s DiarioCritico.com. Nationally, an estimated 28% of children receive inadequate nutrition; one out of every four elderly is also malnourished. Across Europe as a whole, there are an estimated 33 million people at risk for malnutrition, according to the European Food Information Council, which warns that, among some categories of illnesses, 60% of patients are malnourished.

European Council President Herman Van Rompuy told a news conference on Tuesday, at the conclusion of the 31st Russia-EU Summit in Yekaterinburg: “I emphasize the restored financial stability in the Eurozone. The Euro is no longer under existential threat.”
